Meet Rob (aka "The Inventor")

I grew up in a haunted house. It got active after a second floor was added to the house. I have witnessed paranormal activity and unexplainable accounts through my youth and teenage years. You would think I would have stayed interested in the paranormal my whole life. However, I did not. I got into modern paranormal investigations many years later by watching ghost hunting shows. I am a mechanical engineer who is self-taught in programming and microcontrollers and also working on an MBA.

Essentially all my life I have been active in inventing better ways to do things with mechanical-electrical engineering. Now as I add an MBA to my resume I have been looking to start a micro-business, one that I am passionate about. I don’t want to be involved with a ‘Me too’ business, I want to advance designs and think outside the box.

My mother visited last Thanksgiving through Christmas. She is addicted to ghost hunting and dancing shows. I watched the ghost hunting shows with her and my wife watched the dancing shows.

As I watched these ghost hunting shows I wondered about the equipment they were using. The REM Pod seemed to be the most cherished, next to an EMF meter. So, I began tinkering in the basement with some microcontrollers and eventually was able to make an EMF meter, then a REM Pod. A REM Pod emits an EM field and acts as a proximity sensor. Anything that enters the EM field sets off the alarm.

My research uncovered what I believe to be an underserved niche market. Most of the ghost hunting gear on eBay, websites, and Amazon is made-to-order. Meaning hand-made. The cherished REM Pod is made with a 4 inch PVC pipe fitting as the enclosure. The original REM Pod by Gary Galka was made in 2011, a decade ago. I thought to myself, this can be done better while serving this market with a brand they can count on.

I contacted a few manufacturers of enclosures and found one I liked, had it branded with my logo, and created two REM Pods. I knew they needed real-world testing so I reached out to some local paranormal groups. One took my offer for two free REM Pods right away. I gave them the REM Pods and have been in touch with them learning more about what a paranormal investigator needs and wants. They don’t need or want another ‘me too’ product. They want easy-to-use innovative devices and this particular group is constantly feeding me ideas, great ideas.

I am working with an engineering firm in silicon valley and they are designing a modern REM Pod for me. One that doesn’t need an antenna yet has a reach farther than any existing REM Pod … 18+ inches. Rather than an 8-bit alarm sound, this REM Pod will play notes in C-Major.

The paranormal investigators love this as they claim it is more inviting than the alarm. This REM Pod, I am calling the Puck because it will be sleek and small, was originally quoted as a stand-alone circuit board the investigator would install into a trigger device. I began working with a marketing group and they did a quick study and found not many investigators would be interested in a DIY version, but would rather buy a completed product. Now, the engineering firm is still designing the circuit board, it will just be designed to fit inside an enclosure.
